Scott BurfootSCOTT BURFOOT

General Manager of Ice Facilities

Originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada his love for hockey began in his hometown. Scott played hockey at Mercy Hurst College in Erie, Pennsylvania, where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Business with a minor in Hospitality Management. Scott has over 25 years of hockey experience.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Played minor league hockey for over 8 years
  • Served two years as assistant coach for the Rockford IceHogs (UHL) in 1999
  • Played for Rockford IceHogs for 1 year
  • Named head coach of Rockford IceHogs in 2003
  • Began as RPD Hockey Director in 2003
  • Youth coach for Rockford Hockey Club for 15 years
  • Named General Manager of Ice Facilities in May 2016

ADDITIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

  • Jersey retired during college career
  • Inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame
  • ECAC Player of Year, twice
  • Participated in Pan American Games in 1999, received gold medal in roller hockey
  • In the 2015-2016 season, his team won Central States Championship, the Warrior Tournament, and finished 1st in the country on the MyHockey 2015-16 USA 03 – Tier 2 Rankings
  • Level 5 USA Certified Hockey Coach
  • Involved in conception and implementation of Junior IceHogs brand
  • Initiated relationship between Rockford Park District, Rockford IceHogs, and Chicago Blackhawks
  • Recognized need for “off-ice training facility” – opened Junior IceHogs Training Facility in 2009
  • Began Street Hockey program for RPD in 2012

Don WalkerDON WALKER

Hockey Director

Originally from Franklin, Massachusetts, Don Walker started skating when he was five, and started travel hockey at age eleven. Don has over 34 years of hockey experience.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Leading scorer in the New England junior hockey league, 1982–83
  • Tryout with the Boston Bruins in 1983
  • Leading scorer for multiple teams
  • Played in the international league (now called American Hockey League AHL), 1983–84
  • Served as RPD Hockey Coordinator, 2009–15

ADDITIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

  • Franklin High School all conference junior and senior year, All-state senior year in hockey
  • Captain of Franklin High School hockey team junior and senior year
  • Level 5 USA Certified Hockey Coach
  • Coached multiple levels of players from 1984 to present
  • Assisted with opening of Junior IceHogs Training facility

Oak HewerOAK HEWER

Hockey Coordinator

Originally from Ottawa, Canada, his love of the ice began at age 2. He learned how to skate on the longest skating rink in the world, Rideau Canal, which is 5 miles long. Oak has more than 20 years of hockey experience.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Played all minor hockey for Gloucester Rangers
  • Spent one year playing for Tier 2, Central Junior Hockey League as a protected player
  • Played major Jr. Hockey in OHL for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and Northbay Centennials 1996-1999
  • Drafted to Tampa Bay Lightning (NHL) in 1998
  • Moved to Rockford in 2001, played 2 seasons with Rockford IceHogs
  • Co-owner of Rockford Hockey Academy, 2005-2006
  • Volunteer coach for Rockford Park District since 2010
  • Rockford Hockey Club coach since 2011

ADDITIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

  • 4th round pick for OHL draft, 7th round pick in NHL entry draft
  • Received Unsung Hero award from Rockford IceHogs
  • Created new curriculum for the District’s Learn to Skate and Spring Development programs in 2014

Tim MattilaTIM MATTILA

Coach/Parent Development Coordinator

Originally from San Bernardino, California and moved to Sun Prairie, Wisconsin in 1969, where he was introduced to ice hockey. Tim has more than 25 years of hockey experience.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Part of the very first varsity high school hockey team in Sun Prairie in 1974
  • Played hockey at semi-professional level for Janesville Jets during 1981-1982
  • Head coach of Rockford High School hockey team, which became Icemen in 1991
  • Coached Icemen to 16 state championships
  • Coached several all-star teams and ran many off-season camps
  • 2-time All State coach
  • Master Level USA Hockey coach
  • Served as interim coach for the Rockford IceHogs

ADDITIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

  • Level 5 USA Certified Hockey Coach
  • Blackhawk Alumni Coach of the Year in 2007
  • Amateur Hockey Association of Illinois Coach of Year in 2007
  • Received Billy Reay Coach of the Year Award from the Chicago Blackhawk Alumni Association in 2010
  • Inducted into Illinois Hockey Hall of Fame in 2016

Skating

The Rockford Park District operates two skating facilities and one hockey training facility for our ice skating and hockey enthusiasts. The rinks are open for regular public skate sessions, and figure skating and hockey lessons are offered for ages three through adult. Youth and adult hockey leagues are offered year-round at Rockford Park District rinks.

Youth Hockey Clinics

Learn to Skate Holiday Clinic

Ages: 3+

Come out for a Learn to Skate Holiday Clinic! This four-day session will challenge skaters, and continue to improve their skating!

Youth Hockey Camps

Like a Pro

Ages: 6+

Don't wait to sign up–limited spots available! This one-of-a-kind camp includes on-ice instruction, followed by a scrimmage game, a light off-ice workout, the opportunity to watch the IceHogs practice, and lunch at the BMO. Schedule permitting, camp may include a locker room tour and feature special appearances from Rockford IceHogs players and coaches.

No School – Holiday Hockey Camp

No school camp! Take your game to the next level on the ice for an hour and twenty minutes, then work on conditioning off the ice for one hour. Spend the morning working on your game and having fun. The camp will focus on shooting, passing, and skating. Camp is instructed by our experienced Jr. IceHogs staff. Drop off: 8:30 am. Full equipment required.

  • February 19 (Presidents Day)

Holiday Break Hockey Camp

Come out for a Holiday Break Camp! This four-day session will challenge skaters and continue to improve their skating. Your skater will work with our experienced Jr. IceHogs staff to improve skating, stick handling, and shooting! Drop-off begins at 8:30 am. Full equipment required.

Location: Riverview Ice House

Spring Break Hockey Camp

This five-day camp will cover the A-Z of hockey. We will be working on skating, puck control, shooting, and passing. We will be on ice from 9:00 to 10:30 am, then at the Junior IceHogs Training Facility from 10:45 am to 12:00 pm. Friday is game day, and camp will run from 9:00 to 10:30 am. Full hockey gear is required. Drop-off begins at 8:30 am.
