Riverfront Development Projects

The Rock River is our community’s most prominent natural resource, an excellent recreational asset, and popular year‐round community gathering place. With increased attendance at Nicholas Conservatory, Eclipse Lagoon, and the Rock River Recreation Path, there is an immediate need to increase areas for people to utilize for recreational needs, or just to relax.

The Sinnissippi Perennial Gardens Project will act as a continued catalyst for riverfront development with a re-imagined, ADA accessible, sensory garden with native perennial plantings, and the restoration of the Pagoda. The re-imagination of the perennial garden will allow for increased programming on the riverfront including tours, educational sessions and rental options which will lead to additional developments on and around the riverfront. The completion of this area will provide an added value to the campus and will also allow for programming to extend into different settings.

Help Me Play Fund

In addition to the endowment goal, the Rockford Park District Foundation is committed to raising $25,000 in cash to assist with the current programs and projects that currently need support.

Fund one child's opportunity to learn life-long leisure skills: $150 per child Life-long leisure skills including learning to ice skate or learning to swim create a sense of accomplishment in children. These lessons learned as children will encourage adults to remain active throughout their life.

Fund one child's participation in summer camp: $300 per child The memory of our first experience at summer camp is something many of us will never forget. Summer camp is an opportunity to enhance children's self-esteem and sense of confidence when they participate in new activities, whether that is exploring nature or scoring their first goal at Hockey Camp. You can open up a new world by sending a child to one week of summer camp.

Fund one free 7-week Supervised Summer Playground Program: $15,000 Neighborhood-based summer playground programs have been offered by the Rockford Park District since the 1950s and remain as popular as ever. Children participate in crafts, sports, games, table hockey and weekly field trips to local pools and Magic Waters. Summer playground sites bring stability and a sense of security to neighborhoods. Funding for one summer playground site will provide daily activities for hundreds of children.

Atwood Silent Sports Trails

The Atwood Silent Sports Trails Project will develop a recreational compacted earth trail system and supporting amenities within the 334 acres of Atwood Park. Completed trails will complement the existing Education Center by bringing a host of new options for outdoor recreational and educational programming for children. The project will include new signage with dedicated walking paths that include loops and mileage indicators in addition to historic signage regarding the Camp Grant aspect of the site. Ultimately, the goal is to connect the public and participants to their natural and cultural environments.

Youth Programming Endowment

This endowment sustains and enhances the Park District's ability to offer free and low cost recreation programs in the neighborhoods directly to the children who need organized activities the most. These programs keep young people busy during non-school times with physical activities and helps them interact with peers and establish positive relationships.
