Cross Country Skiing

When the conditions are right, the Rockford Park District offers cross-country skiing on the trails at Sinnissippi Golf Course and Aldeen Golf Club.

The Rockford Park District strives to make sure participants experience the very best ski conditions, and would like skiers to keep in mind the following:

    • A minimum of 4 inches of snow is required for trails to be groomed (tracking)
    • Grooming will not occur while it is snowing, raining, or in icy conditions. Grooming will occur within 24 hours of an adequate snowfall, provided the weather allows for safe grooming to occur.
    • Grooming will occur after staff has completed snow plowing duties.
    • For the safety of staff, grooming will not occur when the temperature is 0°F or below, or if the winds are more than 10 mph. This is based on the National Weather Service Wind Chill Index.
    • Trails will be inspected and groomed if necessary during the following days/times: (Monday through Friday - morning and afternoon) ; (Saturday and Sunday - morning)

Snowmobile Trails

Many families love to gas up their snowmobiles and ride the trails in the snowy conditions. The Rockford Park District allows riders on the snowmobile trails at Lockwood Park, Searls Park, and Anna Page Park on designated trails. Trailside Centre at Lockwood Park has restroom facilities available. Trailer parking is also available at Lockwood Park.

The Rockford Park District makes the decision to open or close the trails when there is four or more inches of snow on the trails. Get the latest updates on our Rainout Line. Snowmobile season is from December 10 to March 15.

The trails at Lockwood and Searls Parks connect to the Tri-County trail system, which in turn connect to trails throughout northern Illinois and into Wisconsin.

Use the trails right here at your doorstep to enjoy a hour long ride through the parks or take a day trip to enjoy the rural scenery and to visit the many surrounding small towns via the extensive trail network. The choice is yours.

Snowmobile Safety/Patrols

RPD PDAll 150 miles of marked snowmobile trails in Winnebago County are patrolled by the Rockford Park District Police Department. Current Illinois registration stickers or out of state trail passes are required on all sleds.

The Rockford Park District Police Department wants to remind the public to act responsibly while riding, to prevent avoidable accidents and serious injuries. Illinois state law requires that a person at least 12 years of age, and less than 16 years of age, anyone born after 1985, or any unlicensed driver, must have in their possession a valid Snowmobile Safety Education Certificate of Competency issued by IDNR in order to operate a snowmobile.

Winter Fun

When the snow falls, kids love to go sledding. You can do so at Twin Sisters Park, Aldeen Park, and Sand Park. Sledding at Aldeen Park is only allowed on the north side of the dam.

Note: The Rockford Park District has the authority to close any sledding hill depending on conditions.

Sledding Safety

Sled at your own risk! The Rockford Park District reminds people that they are responsible for safety while sledding on Rockford Park District grounds. Parents are encouraged to make sure supervision is provided before letting children play on the hills.
